Sharks thoughts: what can Joe Pavelski fetch on the free agent market?

first_imgSAN JOSE — With 13 goals in 21 games, Joe Pavelski is putting himself in position to be an attractive commodity on the free-agent market next summer. The Sharks captain, who was named the NHL’s third star of the week Monday, is well on pace to reach the 30-goal mark for the fifth time in his storybook career, showing no indication that he’s on the decline heading toward his 35th birthday in July. Though it’s rare for NHL general managers to hand out lucrative multi-year deals for players in …last_img

WCM: Top Players in Web Content Management

first_imgThe Gartner report MarketScope for Web Content Management, 2007 outlines vendors in the Web Content Management sector.  The product focus of Web Content Management (WCM) vendors has changed quite a bit over the last two years.  Major players in this space tend to be either young and nimble companies that have a primary focus on WCM or else much larger companies, many of whom have products that have been acquired.Web Content Managment (WCM) has traditionally referred to the ability to create, manage and publish web content composed of text and images.   But recently WCM web sites have become increasingly sophisticated, allowing for much greater personalization, multilingual targeted content, and better indexed and cataloged data.  To enable these features, sites are increasingly becoming more dynamic in the content that they deliver.WCM Systems also now typically support workflows between contributors and editors of the web content.  The site operation is targeted towards authors and often requires very little support involvement from members of IT.Backend functionality such as repostory management and library services is increasingly commoditized.  The current differentiators and focus for new WCM tools is on the use of metadata and analytics.  Rather than focusing on the content itself, the focus has shifted to how people use content.Very often now, as web sites take on a more social dimension, web site visitors have more opportunities to participate and contribute content to sites.  WCM is becoming an enabler for departments to deploy processes that complement training, employee self-service, adverisement insertion, and search engine optimization. In this report, Gartner reviews 16 vendors.  While their Gartner rating matrix has five levels from bad to good: strong negative – caution – promising – positive – strong positive, all vendors reviewed fall into either the promising or positive categories.  Only Microsoft received a different rating — caution, and that was because Gartner felt that SharePoint 2007 was, as of yet, a product that doesn’t yet have much of a real world track record. It seems like one conclusion to draw from the report is that there really aren’t any companies with enough differentiators that allow them to break away from the pack.  WCM is an evolving space and one player with a strong vision and execution that can distance itself from the others has not yet emerged.last_img read more

Drying and dehydration—solutions to address global food shortage

Explore further In food processing, drying plays a critical role in food preservation and safe consumption as most food products contain high moisture content which can deteriorate fast under room temperature. If food is not preserved properly, this could result in wastage as high as 50 percent even before reaching to the consumers. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), drying is one of the most accessible and widely used processing technology which can lead to significant improvement in global food security. In view of global human population growth, there is a need to further reduce food wastage and increase the availability of food and drying is one of the viable techniques that we should revisit. In the University of Nottingham Malaysia, a team of chemical and food engineers from the Food and Pharmaceutical Engineering Research Group are investigating drying and dehydration of various food materials using advance dryers. The drying characteristics and quality of various products have been investigated, namely of kedondong, salak, chempedak, ciku, starfruit, birdnest, ancient Chinese mushroom lingzhi, roselle, herbal Asian tea – java tea, moringa, Sabah snake grass, cocoa, papaya leaf, chicken meat, paddy and rice noodle. Significant improvement in nutrient and antioxidant retentions are achievable when these products are dried under low/mild drying conditions. For example, retention of bioactive ingredients in the range of 78 percent to 97 percent was observed in birdnest dried below 40°C using dehumidified air.In addition to that, the research team has also developed and tested advance dryers such as heat pump dryer, adsorption dryer, intermittent dryer, infrared dryer, solar dryer and microwave dryer. Development of these dryers aims to improve the drying rates and efficiency of drying. Drying is an energy intensive operation and could account for up to 15 percent of all industrial energy usage. Fortunately, taking the heat pump dryer as an example, a two-fold increase in drying efficiency could be attained as compared to conventional drying using hot air.In product development, current research areas focus on the development of healthy fruit snacks from underutilised fruits. Completed studies have successfully developed dried fruit snacks from Malaysian fruits salak, chempedak and ciku while research on kedondong is currently on-going. Future studies include the processing of alternative protein sources from edible insects such as mealworm. Consumption of edible insects could help to meet the demand for food protein and also as an environmental friendly option of future food. More information: Thing Chai Tham et al.
