Newman Selected as Candidate for Senior CLASS Award

first_imgFor more information on all the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com. Print Friendly Version Thirty of the top NCAA® softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate softball. Newman, who is Drake’s all-time leader in career strikeouts (935) and wins (71), totals that rank third and 11th all-time in the Missouri Valley Conference. She has been named MVC Pitcher of the Year twice and last season earned Third Team All-American honors. Newman, a three-time All-MVC First Team selection, has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game 36 times in her career. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release. Off the field, Newman, volunteers with multiple organizations in the Drake and Des Moines communities. She has volunteered extensively at Orchard Place, which is a nonprofit organization in Des Moines that provides outpatient, inpatient and community-based mental health services for children. Other organizations, include the ALS Association 5K run, Courage League Sports, Drake Relays Road Races and Meals from the Heartland. Newman will graduate in May with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She has coached youth softball teams the past several summers and plans to pursue a college softball coaching position after graduation. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
