Probe launched into electrocution of GPL contracted worker

first_imgThe Guyana Power and Light has announced that an investigation has begun into the circumstances surrounding the death of an electrical worker, who was electrocuted a few days ago while conducting work for a contracting company.Reports indicate that Andre Fullerton of New Amsterdam, Berbice was employed with Ramoutar and Sons Contracting Services, a sub-contractor for the Power Utility Upgrade Programme (PUUP).This publication understands that he was strapped to a GPL pole when a colleague heard him screaming. When the colleague glanced up at the pole, Fullerton was seen dangling from the distance but was secured by his belt.Fullerton was taken to a nearby health centre, but succumbed due to the extensive burns he sustained.Last year, a linesman attached to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) was hospitalised after suffering from an electric shock in an incident outside Demico House (opposite the Stabroek Square), when technicians were replacing some old power poles.The man, who was identified as Nara Singh, was on the ground holding wires, which suddenly became live with electricity, thus throwing him a few feet backwards. He reportedly landed on his back with the wires resting across his stomach.Singh’s colleagues were able to get the wires off his body, and he was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GHPC).last_img
