VALENCIA – College of the Canyons has developed two new degree programs that will provide lower-division courses for students who plan to go on to four-year institutions and major in theater. The new programs, which include options in general theater and performance theater, begin in the spring semester. Registration is under way. The programs come more than three years after the campus’s crown jewel, the Performing Arts Center, opened on the Valencia campus. Students have been taking theater courses but couldn’t obtain their two-year degrees because no program had been developed, said Audrey Green, dean of program development and community extension. Developing a theater arts academic program has been a goal since the performing arts center opened in 2004, said Susan Hinshaw, chairwoman of the theater department since 1999. Hinshaw said students began registering for courses as soon as the program was announced. In addition to the two new degree programs, the department has plans to develop degree options in technical theater, directing and musical theater, and certificate programs in theater technology, theater performance, and theater management and production.
