Vancouver Battle Ground Hockinson Ridgefield teachers on picket lines

first_imgTeachers who gathered to strike on campuses in Vancouver Public Schools were joined by some of their smallest supporters: their children. To be clear, their actual children — though as Hudson’s Bay High School math teacher Joanie Hahn puts it, she’s got her home family, then her school family. She held her 4-year-old daughter, Charlotte, on her hip while her 7-year-old son, Jared, watched his mom’s co-workers picket. Wednesday was supposed to be Jared’s first day of school at Sarah J. Tip helped lead to arrest in highprofile homicide of federal public defender

first_imgPORTLAND — The breakthrough in the 9-year-old mystery surrounding the killing of a prominent federal public defender came after the suspect talked about the crime and someone tipped off investigators.Prosecutors and police haven’t disclosed what led to the arrest of 28-year-old Christopher Alexander Williamson in the Nov. 24, 2009, strangulation of Assistant Federal Public Defender Nancy Bergeson. But others close to the investigation said it was a combination of tenacity by detectives, the suspect’s loose lips years after the crime and some luck.Court records show Williamson lived at two addresses near Bergeson in Southwest Portland at the time, including one about two miles away. People who knew his family said he had a difficult upbringing with a father convicted of sex crimes and a chaotic home life.Homicide detective Michele Michaels has worked the case as lead investigator since shortly after Bergeson, 57, was found dead in her home. Her colleagues, homicide Detectives Mike Slater and Erik Kammerer, arrested Williamson at 4:34 p.m. Friday at a dialysis center on Southwest Mohawk Street in Tualatin where he received treatment, according to jail and court records. He was booked into Multnomah County’s Inverness Jail that night.last_img read more

Source US prepared Iran attack then withdrew

first_imgWASHINGTON (AP) — The United States made preparations for a military strike against Iran on Thursday night in retaliation for the downing of a U.S. surveillance drone, but the operation was abruptly called off with just hours to go, a U.S. official said. The official, who was not authorized to discuss the operation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the targets would have included radars and missile batteries. The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump had approved the strikes, but then called them off. The newspaper cited anonymous senior administration officials. The White House on Thursday night declined requests for comment.Asked earlier in the day about a U.S. response to the attack, Trump said, “You’ll soon find out.”The swift reversal was a stark reminder of the serious risk of military conflict between U.S. and Iranian forces as the Trump administration combines a “maximum pressure” campaign of economic sanctions with a buildup of American forces in the region. As tensions mounted in recent weeks, there have been growing fears that either side could make a dire miscalculation that led to war.According to the official who spoke to The Associated Press, the strikes were recommended by the Pentagon and were among the options presented to senior administration officials. It was unclear how far the preparations had gone, but no shots were fired or missiles launched, the official said. The military operation was called off around 7:30 p.m. Washington time, after Trump had spent most of Thursday discussing Iran strategy with top national security advisers and congressional leaders.last_img read more

175 Per Cent Drop In Energy Costs At JIS

first_img Jis Receives Budgetary Allocation To Relocate Tv Department Related Items:Donna-Marie Rowe, energy drop, Errol Gardner, jamaica information service Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Recommended for you Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppKINGSTON, Oct. 22 (JIS): Three years after the implementation of energy efficient solutions at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), the agency is reporting savings of 17.5 per cent per annum on its energy bill. The solutions, which include solar control film on windows, cool roof solutions, and overhaul of the air conditioning (a/c) system, were provided under the Energy Efficiency Conservation Programme (EECP), aimed at reducing energy costs across the public sector. Public sector entities are responsible for almost 12 per cent of the country’s overall energy consumption and the Government spends some $14 billion annually to pay for electricity.JIS was among the first entities to benefit from the EECP, implemented in 2011, through funding by the Government in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).Technical Officer for the EECP in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Lincoln Dean, said the figures indicate a steady decline in energy consumption at JIS, which translates to an increase in cost savings for the agency.Mr. Dean, who was speaking in an interview with JIS News, informed that in year one of the project, the agency saw reduction in consumption of just over three per cent from the application of the solar film (tint) energy conservation technique on windows to reduce light and heat.In year two, the cool roofing coat was added, also to cut down on the heat, and this, along with the tinting of windows, resulted in a nine per cent reduction in energy consumption. With replacement of the old a/c unit with a more energy-efficient model in year three, consumption dropped by 17.5 per cent.Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the JIS, Donna-Marie Rowe, said cost containment continues to be a key objective of the JIS and the EECP has contributed significantly in reducing the agency’s energy bill, especially with the installation of the new air conditioning unit. The CEO, in applauding the energy efficiency and conservation initiative, said the Ministry worked well with the agency to execute the various elements of the project with minimal disruption to operations.Director of Corporate Services at the JIS, Errol Gardner, said that in addition to the energy savings, the EECP’s intervention has created an atmosphere that is more conducive for work.He noted that productivity has improved as staff are more comfortable and are working longer hours.Overall, the Government has realised savings of approximately $80 million to date under the EECP, which has been implemented in 40 public sector agencies. Entities such as the Office of the Prime Minister, the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee hospitals, Montego Bay Revenue Service Centre, and the Ministry of Finance and Planning are also benefitting from the retrofitting of their buildings. “Those institutions are also showing at least two to 17 per cent savings,” Mr. Dean informed. The EECP was scheduled to end this year but it is being extended for two more years, which will enable other entities to benefit.Mr. Dean said the objective of the Government is to retrofit the entire public sector with energy savings systems, so that the Government will serve as a model for energy efficiency and conservation in Jamaica.last_img read more
